Matt Cameron Exits Pearl Jam After 27 Years: “It’s Been an Incredible Journey”
Matt Cameron, the powerhouse drummer behind some of Pearl Jam’s most defining moments, has officially stepped away from the band after 27 years. The longtime member announced his departure on Monday, marking the end of a transformative era for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted group.
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron wrote in a heartfelt statement. “Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter… I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Pearl Jam Pays Tribute: “A Singular and True Powerhouse”
The remaining members of Pearl Jam — Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament — shared a joint tribute honoring Cameron’s contributions:
“From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skin Yard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer.
He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.”

A Legacy Carved in Sound: From Soundgarden to Pearl Jam
Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998, shortly after the breakup of his previous band, Soundgarden, where he had already become one of grunge’s most respected rhythm players. What started as a short-term gig evolved into nearly three decades of creative partnership, making Cameron the longest-serving drummer in Pearl Jam’s history.
He played on every Pearl Jam studio album from 2000’s Binaural to 2024’s Dark Matter, anchoring the band’s evolving sound with precision, power, and artistry. His versatility helped guide the group through experimental phases and back to their raw rock roots, always with a steady hand and creative edge behind the kit.
A Two-Time Hall of Famer
Cameron’s legacy extends beyond Pearl Jam. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam. In 2025, he was honored once again — this time for his foundational role in Soundgarden, whose influence on alternative and metal music remains monumental.
What’s Next for Cameron?
While Cameron has not yet detailed his future plans, his “more to follow” sign-off suggests new music or collaborations may be on the horizon. Known for his work in side projects like Hater, Wellwater Conspiracy, and collaborations with Queens of the Stone Age, fans can likely expect more sonic exploration from the revered drummer.
Pearl Jam's Path Forward
Pearl Jam has not yet announced a replacement drummer or tour adjustments in light of Cameron’s exit. The band recently released Dark Matter to strong reviews and had been teasing a new creative chapter ahead of its 2025 tour plans.
With one of the strongest fan bases in rock and a history of navigating transitions, Pearl Jam appears poised to continue forward — but the void left by Cameron’s departure will be deeply felt by fans and bandmates alike.
Closing a Chapter
For fans of grunge, hard rock, and alternative music, Matt Cameron’s departure marks the end of an era. His drum work has not only shaped the sound of Pearl Jam but also defined an entire generation of rock. While he may be stepping off the stage with Pearl Jam, his legacy behind the drum kit will continue to resonate for decades to come.
